4 April 2010 – Easter Sunday.

April 4, 2010The Korner22 Comments

It’s 4:31 on Easter Sunday and we just had another small aftershock.  I did receive a comment that the earthquake we had was a 6.9 on the Richter Magnitude Scale.  Rather a big one for sleepy San Felipe.  Stay tuned for more information which I will post as soon as I receive it.  Have a Happy Easter.

We just had an earthquake here in San Felipe and although nothing was damaged, it was a bit scary.  I was sitting on my bed and all of a sudden the bed started to shake.  I thought it was Muffy hitting the bed and I started to get up to investigate and the shelves loaded with glass started to shake and it felt like the house was about to collapse.  I ran outside and the dogs were freaking out and the sirens were going off like crazy.  That was at about 3:45 p.m. and let’s hope we don’t have any aftershocks.  I am going to drive downtown and see if there is any damage to the Malécon and don’t be worried.  We are, after all, on a fault line.  We are having a bit of an aftershock right now, so I’ll post this and get my butt outside. Please check in later for an update.

    Hi Kat

The road to Ensenada is in fairly good shape (pot holes to watch out for) but it is a good alternative to take back to the states (California) and the toll road from Ensenada is in perfect condition. The border wait times are only about 30 mins during mid day in Tijuana. It is also a nice drive to go to San Felipe that way. We came from San Felipe on Monday and will return to San Felipe on Friday the same way.

Hola Kat, pretty good roller here in San Diego. Thanks for the update. Guess I need to come down, look for damage… pretty sure all the damage will be in my liver though!

    Hi Kat,
San Felipe was the first place I thought about. Thank you for posting the update. We’re in San Luis Obispo, CA and we didn’t feel the quake.
Take care and please keep us posted.

Kat, TV in LA was showing what they said was a newer home in San Felipe that almost collapsed, it was buckled up pretty good. Are there any Tsunami warnings in the Mar de Cortez?
    Ten Cuidado Kat!

Looks like they upgraded it to a 7.2. Pretty big for so little damage, which is very good!

Unfortunately, just heard there were two deaths, and by the photos, there seems to be plenty of damage to clean-up. But, as a 7.2 this quake could have been devastating. Our thoughts are with everyone in the area.

watching news and shaker upgraded to 7.2. It appears that damage was done in the Mexicali area. Would like to know more on El Dorado homes and vacinity, thank you

Glad to hear that so far there is no reported damage or injuries from such the 7.2 earthquake. How is Tony Colleraine doing? The last I heard he went to San Diego after having a heart attack in San Felipe. Seaside Susie

    Hi Kat,
Glad to say it was no big deal in San Felipe – we were relieved to know that our straw bale house should be ok as well. We heard that it was felt as far as Cabo San Lucas. Caltech has now upgraded it to a 7.2 earthquake, located 17 miles southwest of Quadalupe Victoria, BC, Mexico. They have not determined which fault it is on, however it is not the San Andreas fault. It was a 60 mile long fault and of the “strike slip” type (vertical quake with ground movement horizontal). There was substantial damage in Mexicali but not sure how much. We felt it up here in Calabasas, CA (San Fernando Vally) and it was not a shaker but a roller. All was ok at our house the water in the pool was still moving after 30 minutes. Thanks so much for your great communications.
