Internet is still out in some places in San Felipe. There is no rhyme or reason to the outages as my next door neighbor has no Internet and I never lost mine. There are reported outages in El Dorado Ranch, Campo Ocotillos, Pop’s Camp and in town. Here’s a telephone number (although if you can’t get on line, I doubt you’ll be reading this message) 1-800-123-2222 for more information.
I have a new article from Dario’s Baja Salutations or more to the point, Darryl Silva. You can find it under Articles and the name of his latest masterpiece is entitled “Maybe Alone But Not Lonely“. Be sure and read his previous postings as Darryl’s writing style and humor is excellent. While you’re in our Articles section, check out Anita’s and Luis’ articles. We have talented writers in San Felipe!
The Code San Felipe 200 Race is April 16-18 here in San Felipe and there will be cash prizes to the winners. If you are interested in signing up for this race or simply want to find the best place to watch it, check out their page here.
Shirley Thompson went to Banamex on April fools day. Unfortunately, it was closed and now it seems there is a sign on the door which reads “Closed Permanently” and something about Civil Protection. At any rate, if you have an account with Banamex, I suggest you call Mexicali or Mexico City to see what the status of your account is. It may be that they are only closing the branch in San Felipe and everything is fine. If you do find out anything, I would appreciate a heads up!
An update on the borders in Mexicali – both borders are open and there is approximately a 55 minute wait. The highway is damaged, however, it is passable allowing for detours around the cracks. There is no damage in San Felipe to speak of, however, there was damage in Mexicali and surrounding areas. It is safe to travel to San Felipe and as President Caldéron told the residents of Mexicali, don’t be afraid. Here is a report from a Google Alert I received regarding the damage from the earthquake.
Kyle Crawford and Doreen Butler both sent me photos taken of the damage to the highway from Mexicali to San Felipe and you may look at those by clicking here or go to Kat’s Gallery #2. Although there is damage to the roads, they have made detours and it’s my understanding there is a 13 mile detour so keep that in mind when timing your trip. I absolutely do not recommend anyone drive at night. The highway is very dark and without a full moon, you won’t be able to see all of the cracks and whatnot. Here’s one of the photos of the highway and although I’d like to give photo credit, I’m not sure who took the photos, but I’m sure someone will let me know.
News reports say we had another earthquake last night registering 4.2 on the Richter Magnitude Scale. I didn’t feel it, however, they may have felt it in Mexicali. It is safe to drive here; simply be aware of damage and drive cautiously. President Felipe Caldéron made a visit to Mexicali and handed out food and told the residents not to be afraid. We are pretty important to warrant the President of Mexico’s presence. I am preparing an update on roads, internet and border crossings, and I’ll post it as soon as I’m done. Please check back.

Thanks for getting up to date info on the website regarding road conditions, etc. There was some damage in San Felipe. Go tp the El Cortez Hotel and see how much of the TEQUILA displayed in the entrance to the restaurant was lost in the earthquake and in the consequent clean-up!! All those beautiful bottles gone!!
Kat,
The sign in the door at Banamex referred to the bank being closed 1 April and 2 April (Thursday and Friday) for the Easter Holidays. The Bank is open, it is not permanently closed, nor is there any problems with it. I have had clients calling from the States, worried about the bank closing and losing their money!
