I hear it’s a bit windy and cooler in San Felipe.  I received an email from Ed Meders, owner of the San Felipe Title Book Store down on Mar de Cortez.  He wanted to let us know the Imperial County International Airport is closed and traffic is being diverted to Yuma.  Funny, United didn’t say anything yesterday when I called them.  At any rate, yes, it was closed but I called today and spoke with Carla and she told me it is open but to contact Skywest Airlines as they were handling all the traffic.  She said “people are walking in and out”.  So, it’s open now, but I do recall a gentleman telling me it would be closed to make repairs from the earthquake damage.

I will be posting more this afternoon, but I wanted to get this out to you.  I would have been a little upset had I left today hoping to arrive in El Centro and then finding myself in Yuma! Arizona’s new anti-immigration law has Mexico up in arms and I can’t say I blame them.  “Mexico’s government has strongly condemned Arizona’s controversial new anti-illegal-immigration law.  Mexican President Felipe Calderon says the measure will open the door to “intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse” of Mexican citizens.” It seems a bit drastic.

  2. Right On Kat! The ugly racial profiling of SB 1070 is like spitting in the face of all Mexicans and MExican Americans, who the bill is aimed at. It requires that LE ask people they “reasonably suspect” might be undocumented to show proof they are in Arizona legally. It will open the door to ugly incidents of racial and ethnic profiling of this there is no doubt, it is going on daily already (Sheriff Joe Arpayaso and his 3,000 man posse going after Mexicans on a daily basis is proof of this),
The proponents of #1070 admit freely that the law is aimed at scaring away MExicans (and Mexican Americans), because according to racists like Ariz Senatorial candidate JD Hayworth (who wants to stop not only illegal immigration but also legal immigration), if more MExicans are allowed to reside in Arizona it will find itself an Aztec State and the traditional “Southwest American Sovereignty” will be a thing of the past.

Can you imagine a public political figure making a statement like that?
It’s reminiscent of some old racist Southern politican calling for lynchings of Black People to scare them off and keep them in their place.
After all the sacrifices that Mexicans and MExican Americans have given for the country in so many wars and conflicts. Mexican Americans have repeatedly shown that they are some of the most patriotic Americans and the people of MExico have always been good neighbors to the USA.
THis is a horrible situation in Arizona and today I heard on the news that some idiot in Texas is introducing the Arizona SB1070 to the Texas legislature to get this draconian law in place there too.
A sad state of affairs nowadays Kat but if we all hang tough and call it like it is, “racial and ethnic profiling” then maybe democracy and freedom will win the day.

    BOYCOTT ARIZONA!!

    Sincerely,
    Tim Trujillo
