Yesterday was the Baja 500 and Bill, Shawnee and I headed up to Borrego, arriving at about 10:00 a.m.  It only got to 106 F and I about died from sun stroke, but it was a really fun time.  You may see photos on Kat’s Gallery here and I made a video for YouTube out of the photos which you can see here (although they say it sometimes takes two to three hours before it shows.  Shawnee stood on the tail gate of their truck and took a video of most all the cars.  I was suffering from heat stroke, so I didn’t get as many photos as I wanted to.  I did take about 447 with one camera – but out of those, you usually can only use about 100.  I took others with my smaller camera too.  It was a fun day, in spite of the heat. The only thing that really bugged me was we were there at 10:00 a.m. and had a great place to take photos.  When the trophy trucks were about to come through, people started pulling in and standing in front of us.  There were also some real dummies driving on the course and I was standing in the middle where the road splits and the racers can go on either side and I had to yell at this woman “get off the track, there’s a car coming” …. she just missed getting smashed and causing a terrible accident.  Cordel and Cathy and their group showed up a few hours after we got there, but they sat on the other side of the road.

I heard from Cordel Ellingston that Andy McMillin was the winner.  Racers from at least 26 U.S. States, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan and Mexico have entered in this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500.  Photo by Katherine “Kat” Hammontre.

I have more scoop, but I am already late for a luncheon with the girls and then the Tiburones are playing the Tigers at 2:00 p.m. But I promise to finish posting when I return, so please check back.  Happy Sunday.

  1. Hi Kat, been following you for a while now. I have a comment on your monday post. I was the Rescue 4 Score Paramedic at the race at the Borrego pits on Saturday and boy was it hot!! Just a clarification on your comment reference heat stroke. You were suffering (like we all were) from heat exhaustion rather than heat stroke. Heat stroke is characterized by a rapidly falling blood pressure, altered level of conciousness and elevated temperature. This condition has a 85% mortality rate. Just a clarification, I enjoy your site and view it every day!
Just moved here full time and am enjoying SF. Talk to u soon, Rick
