I was going to edit Saturday’s post and add more photos and scoop, but by the time I finished answering email, the phone, trying to keep my dogs in and more, it’s now 12:51 so I can officially say it’s Monday, very early!  I meant to post this a few days ago and I spaced it out, but better late than never.  Desert Mothers is very dear to my heart because these women are learning to make a living which doesn’t include cleaning toilets or making beds.  As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the most important organizations in San Felipe.  The women are finding out they have talent and their self-esteem is growing in leaps and bounds, so, if you can possibly make it, please do.  The other organization dear to me is the San Felipe Cancer Society here in San Felipe. They have saved a lot of lives from early detection and all monies collected are used to detect and treat cancer victims.  (I’ll bet you don’t recognized this lovely lady.  Linda has lost about 113 pounds and she looks great.  Congrats Linda).

This is from Donna Roberts: “DONNA ROBERTS is turning 70!  Come and join us to celebrate and to help raise funds for Desert Mothers. WHEN: June 25th WHERE: RUMORS BEACH BAR AND GRILL TIME: 4:00 p.m. ADMISSION: $8.00 INCLUDED IS A SPAGHETTI DINNER AND, OF COURSE, A PIECE OF BIRTHDAY CAKE. ENJOY LIVE ENTERTAINMENT BY TAVO’S BAND AND DENNY FLANNIGAN.

On a very special note: Donna and Desert Mothers are very excited and proud to announce a joint fund raising effort with the San Felipe Cancer Society. Under the artistic direction of Kari Montrose, Desert Mothers will create beautiful pieces of art representing “Life after Cancer” and the first piece will debut at the party. From there, “Life after Cancer” will travel to galleries throughout Mexico and the United States. Additional pieces will be available November 2010. Tickets available at: Desert Mothers, San Felipe Cancer Center, San Felipe Salt Co., Sunrunner Mail Center, Fat Boys, Rumors Beach Bar & Grill and Kat’s Korner/The Net upstairs at LaPlazita.”

And speaking of Desert Mothers, IronMan Steve Sherrod held his workshop for them recently and after you see what he taught the women to make, I’ll bet you’ll wish you had gone.  I am very impressed.  Please click on the thumbnails to see a larger version.  Photos by Donna Robers or Steve Sherrod.

From MrRagtime@aol.com sent this little note and I marked it on my calendar, as it doesn’t happen very often.  Actually, more like nunca.  (That’s Spanish for “never” and is pronounced noonka).  “Kat: I probably stand corrected.  A few e-mails advised that the tree is actually a Royal Poinciana.  Might be true since other photos are bright red, climate is not important, salty sea breeze helps.  Originally from Madagascar, it is found in Brazil and southern Mexico.”  Don’t feel bad Tom. A friend of mine told me I have a Dogwood Tree in my yard and I know that’s wrong.  He also sent a long email on the history of the tree which I’ll post tomorrow, but here is part of it: “Royal Poinciana is a native of Madagascar and is consistently voted among the top 5 most beautiful flowering trees in the world.  Royal Poinciana deserves its support.  It may be the most colorful flowering tree in the world as well.  Other common names for Royal Poinciana include Flamboyant Tree, Flame Tree, Mohur Tree and Red Flame.”  We are talking about this tree, which incidentally, has bloomed more since I took the photo last week.

Speaking of flowers, the Illustrated Lady aka Irene Smith sent me a photo of an Angel Wing Begonia. “It is in full bloom on my porch.  A cutting was given to me which has been growing for over 100 years.” She has promised me a cutting and when my rockery is finished, I plan to put it there, along with many Novias del Sol.  I used to have a lot of them in my yard and they come in all different colors.  They are called “Girlfriends of the Sun” because they open up during the day and close at night.  Here’s a photo of the Begonia.

I had a wonderful lunch with the ladies at the Sweet Spot today and then I went to the first half of the JV Tiburone’s game.  I am too tired to work any more photos tonight, but I will do it tomorrow (or later today, I should say).  I have an early morning podcast with our Mayor.  Stay tuned and have a happy manic Monday.  Ladies, you’ll see your photos later today and thank you Ms. Rice for the nice time.

  1. The angel wing begonia that you showed was from my wife’s grandmother & Darlene was very pleased to see how great the plant looked. Irene has taken great care of this treasure. Jerry

  2. Thank-you Kat,because of your support Desert Mothers has been able to grow by leaps and bounds. With your help of getting the word out, people from the States, Canada and Mexico are opening up their hearts to us and helping us. We could not have done it without your help and love. The women really love you Kat and love it when you stop by. Thank-you so very much. Desert Mothers
