Memorial Day weekend is here and there’s lots to do in San Felipe over the three day weekend. I’ll give you a recap later. It was my future mother-in-law’s 82nd birthday today, so two of Mikey’s sisters, Debbie and Nancy and I took her out to dinner at a newer restaurant in town called “Montana Mikes” and it was excellent and we had a lot of laughs. Came home and watched the Heat beat the Bulls. The Miami Heat just beat Chicago Bulls and what a game. I never really was an avid basketball fan, but I have become one. I guess if you can’t beat them, join them. It’s amazing how these guys who are giants, can jump so high while twisting around to make a basket or make a basket from the middle of the court. With three minutes left in the game, Miami was 12 points down and came back and won. Most people in this neck of the woods are Chicago fans, but I like Miami and I like to watch Dallas. It’s was Margy Craig’s 82nd birthday and we all met at the restaurant which was opening when I was visiting last summer. There are five children in the family, like me and they seem to all have beautiful blue eyes. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my future “suegra” or in English, mother-in-law, Mother Margy a very happy birthday and wishes for many more. Photo by Kat.

James Hatton, aka Mr. Dictionary dot com sent this photo a while back of Loreto and I don’t remember if I posted it, but it’s pretty so I’ll post it now. He also sent me this little ditty from Race-Dezert.com: “Out of 280 Total reported deaths of US citizens (by non-natural causes) in MEX total, 67 of these (23%) occurred in BAJA – 29 Homicides; 18 Car and Motorcycle accidents; 6 Drownings; 7 Suicides; 4 Aircraft Accidents.” Read more here. I planted that beautiful red Bouganvilla when it was a baby. Not a bad view either. Good job Syb. Photo by Sybil Stanton.
Stephanie wrote this: “Come join us at the Sweet Spot Friday night @ 6pm with music by Mike & Eloy. Dinner specials: Octopus with garlic and butter; Lobster; Fillet Mignon; Drink Special: Watermelon Mojitos. Gracias, Stephanie” You can make a reservation or if you have any questions, give Stephanie a call at 686-577-6366 or thesweetspotsf@yahoo.com. Karaoke has been moved to Fridays according to Cesar and for this memorial weekend it would be at La Palapa pool – food and drink specials. Karaoke hosted by Robbie. Rumors has their one year anniversary party with Javier Batiz Friday night so you may want to put that on your schedule. If you see a woman named “Frenchie” wearing this dress, ask her to take it off. It belongs to my friend Sybil. Photo by Pierre.
First: A reality check on Mexico – “Mexico is in a unique position to reap many of the benefits of the decline of the US economy. In order to not violate NAFTA and other agreements the U.S.A. cannot use direct protectionism, so it is content to allow the media to play this protectionist role. The U.S. media – over the last year – has portrayed Mexico as being on the brink of economic collapse and civil war. The Mexican people are either beheaded, kidnapped, poor, corrupt, or narco-traffickers. The American news media was particularly aggressive in the weeks leading up to spring break. The main reason for this is money. During that two-week period, over 120,000 young American citizens poured into Mexico and left behind hundreds of millions of dollars.” I’m sure many people have read this article from Steve Schwab’s Blog. It’s very well written and factual. Give it a read and see what you think. Please click here to read more. Here’s a photo Sybil sent me which I took at her home in Newport Beach. Desiree’ and Khye, who is a year older than the photo, will both be coming for the “royal” wedding, Newton style. Photo by Kat.
My buddy, MrRagtime, tells me we now have a new (even a brand new building) Thrifty Ice Cream with a Mr Kaffee and wi-fi on Chemutal across from the new City office building. Other than that, business stinks – many closures. It’s so sad to see so many small businesses biting the dust. Another reason to shop locally! The thought just crossed my mind that San Felipe is sometimes or at least in the last three years, has been rather like a business in the box – one pops up and one pops down. Strange analogy, but it’s late. Photo by Nancy Owens-Munley.
From a new resident photographer, Mel Russell: “Kat, Just rented a Nice Little Casa on the beach to check out retirement here. Wanted to share an Image from my First Morning Sunrise ; ) ! Not one like it since; Also trying to do some Time Lapse Photography to show Hi-Low tides they are so amazing; needs to be slowed down about another 50% ! Was my first time; need more battery’s they only last 4 hours need 7 hours for Hi-low Tide, 17 hours for Sunrise Hi-Low Tide Sunset. Will be ready for Sunrise-Hi-Low-Tide-Sunset in June. Also every morning I wait for a Sun-Rise to do a TL video but Still no Magic Clouds.” Mel is also looking for other photographers in the area and welcome to our little village by the sea.
Please check Tuesday’s posting for a listing of the activities this weekend. Remember, always try and leave your spot cleaner than when you found it. Don’t drink and drive – it’s against the law and we have taxis. If you get into trouble, do not try and bribe anyone. Please don’t drive down at night unless you absolutely must and have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. I will post more tomorrow because I have tons of photos but my neck and fingers are sore from leaning over a hot laptop. Happy, happy Friday!!

Had a great dinner at Oshis Japanese restaurant last night. They say they are open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. I sure hope others dine there so they stay open.
That’s good news as I thought they had closed. Thanks for the scoop Julie.
Hi Kat, first I love the photos! Second, my sincerest congrats on your upcoming wedding! I’m also glad to see you are compromising with taking the weekends ‘off’—doing Anything day in and day out can get to be a drag or a stretch no matter how much you love doing it, receive benefit from it, or want to do it. Hoping this will refresh you and revitalize the inner juices a little. So–TGIF, and hoping you have a great Memorial Weekend, mi amiga!
hugs, Carolyn
