29 January 2012 – Sundays with Baja Belle

Hola from the Homeland
After the long but thankfully uneventful trip south through the farm lands of central California, with rolling hills and cattle feed lots, permeating the air with a magnitude of fertilizer scent,  Dan and I crossed the border Thursday and only arrived in the Homeland of San Felipe late Thursday.    I haven’t had any chance at all to compose an honest to goodness article, so I’m sending my apologies to one and all.  However, I can report the windy City of San Felipe and area  are experiencing gusty winds, with blue skies that remain lovely just the same, and we have begun to get into the R & R this side of the Baja peninsula is known for.  Had a really jamming time at Rumors Thursday night, enjoying the very danceable music of the 2 a.m. Band–and as a social dancer myself, I’m glad to report there were a sizable number of dancers out on the floor enjoying the music and grooven.  Unfortunately, I remain sidelined with this bum leg of mine, the pulled ligament continuing to limit me.  So no dancing any time soon for the Belle here.  But Dan and I still thoroughly enjoyed the evening and unknown to us at the time, we were sitting next to author, musician and fellow scribe Sam Grubb and his vivacious and lovely wife Diane!  We got together again (this time a planned ‘date’) on Friday night at La Vaquita restaurant, where the Baja Boys continued the fun times and great music.  Sam actually joined the band sharing a few of this unique completely self-written songs, and we also enjoyed the licks provided by guest musicians Susan Douglas on bass and Joe Danino on guitar, who also joined the Boys for some more Good Times Roll’n.   Photos, if they come out, hopefully will follow in an upcoming segment.
Way too short a trip this time in our Little City by the Sea, but we’re going to make the most of it while here, believe me!
More next time!

It’s Friday and I’m glad.  After I left the bat cave yesterday, I went and had my nails done and had a pedicure and you want to know why (aside from the fact that my nails looked like hell) I did it?  Because I deserve it, just like those “Loreal Gals”.  When (not if) I win the lottery, I’m going to have a professional massage every day and have my hair washed and dried too.  (I also plan to give a lot of it away, so be nice to me).  Tonight, you may feel like a change in your normal Friday night schedule by going to listen to Tom and Marge Scott at the Los Arcos Restaurant.  They’re cool peeps and talented to boot.  The fun begins at 4:00 p.m. with Fish and Chips and again on Sunday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the restaurant will be serving a beef special.  Let me know how you liked it, if you would be so kind.

Happy Thursday which is so lame but unfortunately, I’m having a bad case of writer’s block.  Oh well, I’ll get over it.  We have another gala event being held to help feed the poor and to help the animals of San Felipe and it’s called “Simply Baja…a Tequila and Wine Tasting Event”.  “Picture yourself in an elegant restaurant overlooking the beautiful Sea of Cortez….a glass of wine or tequila in your hand….beautifully arranged trays of cheeses and appetizers just waiting to tempt your taste buds…….It is not a dream…..you can make it happen…..Simply Baja, a Tequila and Wine Tasting Event, will be held at the Pavilion Restaurant at El Dorado Ranch on Feb 29th. This event is a fund raiser for Volunteers Without Limits, an organization that helps the local Food Bank and children with disabilities in San Felipe. This event will feature Tequilas and Wines from a vendor in Ensenada. There will be samples of Mexican cheeses available for you to taste as well as the wines and tequilas. The ambiance of the evening will be enhanced with performances by Flamenco dancers and their guitarist. The tasting will begin at four pm, and a meal will be served from five thirty to seven 7 pm. Things should come to a close at approximately eight 8 pm.  There will be a silent auction, a 50/50 draw and door prizes as well as the tastings, the meal and the entertainment. This is a great value for your money and you will be helping a very worthwhile cause. The tickets are $18.00 US per person or 250 Mx. pesos pre-sale and are available at the following locations:  One of A Kind; Pavilion Restaurant; and Volunteers Without Limits Thrift Store.  Tickets purchased at the door will be $20.00 US or equivalent Mx. pesos.”  Both of these organizations volunteer their time and sometimes their own funds to help feed the local population who otherwise would probably not eat regularly.  I remember my friend Sonja’s in-laws who lived close to the Navy Base.  There was an old broken down car sitting in front of the shack they all lived in but it served it’s purpose.  The old man, who was a retired fisherman, sat in that car all day because of the sun hitting the windows warmed it up nice and cozy.  Seriously, it was warmer in the car than in their house.  With tourism and fishing on the downside, these folks need help so, please help, if you can.  And if you can’t, don’t feel guilty.  Times are hard for a lot of middle class peeps.
