Current tourism situation in Mexico

Recent numbers about Mexico’s tourism are impressive, especially the last ones that show the extremely high percentage of travelers who would return to Mexico and recommend it to others.  I hope you find this information helpful.

Overall Tourism:
•    Mexico ranks 10th globally in international tourism, and 23rd in international tourism revenues.
•    Tourism is the third largest source of foreign exchange earnings, equivalent to 9% of Mexico’s GDP.
•    Mexico’s tourism industry generates 2.5 million direct jobs, and more than 5 million indirect jobs.
•    Mexico is the main tourist destination for North American travelers, holding a market share of 16.5% of outbound tourists.
•    Although our numbers from the U.S. have not kept pace, other countries have increased.  A huge surprise:  Russian tourists spend an average of $1,000 USD per day!

Tourist Arrivals:
•    In 2009:  21,500,000 tourists entered Mexico by air.  In 2010:  22,400,000.  An increase of 4.4%.  How could so many be wrong?
•    These numbers do not take into account the 50 million+ visitors who crossed the border by car, or the 3 million+ who came on cruises in 2010.
•    January – March 2011:  9,573,000 international tourists have visited Mexico – already a 2.1% increase from last year.

Hotel Occupancy:
•    January – July, 2011:  We have seen 171,505 room occupation in the 70 main tourist centers (as monitored by DATATUR.)  2.6% higher than the same period in 2010, and 14% higher than 2009.
Survey Results from U.S. Travelers by SECTUR:
•    Would return:  98%
•    Would recommend to friends and family:  99%
•    Hospitality Index: 9.2 out of 10.

Many thanks to Vivian Scott and Mirna Choy for this excellent information!
